Christian McCaffrey is questionable to return in Sunday’s Week 7 game against the Atlanta Falcons due to a thigh injury, according to the broadcast.

What happened

McCaffrey was getting his lower left leg worked on during the first half of Sunday’s game in Atlanta, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. The 49ers then announced McCaffrey is questionable to return with a thigh injury.

Context

McCaffrey entered the game with 122.0 PPR points through six games, including 77 carries for 350 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. He also had 28 receptions for 190 receiving yards. In Week 6, McCaffrey posted 30.7 PPR points on 16 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns, plus nine catches for 53 yards.

Depth chart

If McCaffrey cannot return, Kaelon Black is the next running back on the depth chart. Black has 19.8 PPR points this season with 45 carries for 170 rushing yards and two receptions for eight receiving yards. Jordan James is listed as RB4 with four carries for 15 yards.

What’s next

San Francisco is facing the Falcons on the road on Sunday, October 25.

#49ers say Christian McCaffrey (thigh) is questionable to return.

🏈 Fantasy impact

McCaffrey’s status is uncertain, but managers should prepare for him to miss the rest of this game. If he does not return, Kaelon Black becomes the next man up and would see the bulk of the work, though he has just 3.3 PPR points per game this season and isn’t a strong replacement. Jordan James is a deeper backup with minimal production. Keep McCaffrey on your bench for now, but if you need a spot start this week, look to add Black only in deep leagues as an emergency option. The 49ers’ passing game may lean more on its receivers if McCaffrey misses time, but no other running back has shown enough to be a reliable fantasy starter. Hold McCaffrey in all formats until more information is available, but don’t expect top-tier production from any San Francisco back behind him.
